BECA will be holding our Cleaning the Capital event this year on Saturday May 6th! See details below for locations.

When: Saturday May 6, 10 AM until 2 PM (rain date Sunday May 7, 10 AM - 2 PM)

Where: Our six community parks

Why: To clean up litter in our parks, pathways and public areas after this long winter! To be a part of this amazing community and contribute your time and energy to keep it beautiful and vibrant! To teach our kids about taking care of our neighbourhoods and each other!

How: Just show up at a park, grab a kit, pick up litter! See important notes below.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE BRING THE GARBAGE BAGS HOME TO DISPOSE OF NEXT GARBAGE COLLECTION (which is next Monday/Thursday). Throwing the bags in park bins is not permitted.

STAY SAFE:

  • Never touch a needle with your hands. Follow safe pickup procedures, or call 3-1-1 (TTY: 613-580-2401) for assistance.

  • Wear gloves (supplied) and appropriate footwear.

  • Wear pants and long-sleeved shirts.

  • Clean only the non-travelled portion of a roadway.

  • Do not lift heavy objects.

  • Supervise children in their cleanup efforts and emphasize that safety comes first.

  • There must be one adult present for every six children less than 12 years of age.

  • Children must never touch items like glass, broken wood, metal, needles, or household hazardous waste. It’s a good idea to double up your garbage bags for transporting these items.

  • Be aware of your surroundings and the potential hazards (i.e. poison ivy, wild parsnip, streams and branches) and remember to put on protective eyewear as necessary.

  • The blacklegged tick that carries the bacteria that can cause Lyme disease (link is external) is present in the Ottawa area, across Eastern Ontario, and the Outaouais region of Quebec.
